¿Qué tienen en común Rocky Newton, Def Leppard, Lionheart, MSG y Grand Slam? ¡Sigue leyendo para descubrirlo!
Hace un par de semanas me enteré que un músico de mi ciudad natal estaba grabando un vídeo con su banda “Grand Slam” cerca de donde vivo en Valencia. He oído hablar de la banda “Grand Slam”, pero me sentí un poco avergonzado por no conocer realmente a Rocky Newton. Ambos venimos de Grantham y ambos fuimos a la Kings Grammar School, él es amigo de mi prima, pero nuestros caminos nunca se habían cruzado hasta ahora.
Conduje hasta Biker Bar en Moraira, donde la banda estaba grabando el vídeo y estuve con Rocky Newton y el resto de los miembros del Grand Slam: Benjy Reid, Laurence Archer y Mike Dyer.
Solo tenía dos preguntas que hacerle a Rocky: tres cosas por las que nuestra ciudad natal es famosa y que él me contaría sobre su carrera musical:
Hola, soy Rocky Newton y tres cosas por las que Grantham (G Town!) es famoso son: Margaret Thatcher, Gingerbread e Isaac Newton, de quienes somos la línea de descendientes más cercana. ¡También fue a la escuela Kings, a la que asistimos tanto tú como yo!
Bueno, la primera banda destacada fue “Lionheart”, de la cual todavía soy miembro y ahora tenemos un nuevo álbum llamado “The Grace Of A Dragonfly”. Formamos “Lionheart” en Londres en 1980 y luego nos mudamos a LA para grabar un álbum, hicimos una gira hasta alrededor de 1985, cuando la banda llegó a una conclusión natural.
Luego me pidieron que fuera a Alemania para tocar con Michael Schenker en algunos álbumes de estudio, para su hermano Rudolf de los Scorpions. Michael creó la banda MSG (McAuley Schenker Group) y me pidió que fuera parte de ella, ¡lo cual fue increíble!
Cantamos para EMI en el Reino Unido y para Capital en los EE. UU. y terminamos de gira por el mundo y estuve involucrado en los siguientes 3 álbumes, e incluso pude escribir algunas de las canciones yo mismo.
Antes de todo esto tenía una banda llamada The Next Band con otros dos compañeros de la escuela Kings: Frank Noon y John Lockton. Terminamos mudándonos a Sheffield y nos hicimos amigos de un jovencísimo Def Leppard. Estuvimos allí cuando audicionaron para bateristas y en su primer disco, tomaron prestado a nuestro baterista (Frank Noon) porque estaban entre bateristas en ese momento. Esto era 1979. Su carrera despegó a un ritmo mucho mayor que la nuestra, pero nos mantuvimos en contacto y recibí una llamada del cantante principal (Joe Elliot) y me pidió que fuera a Londres a grabar algunos coros para » Rock de años»
Unos años más tarde, estábamos todos en la boda de Frank Noon y Joe me pidió nuevamente que hiciera los coros; de hecho, terminé haciendo los coros en todo el álbum “Hysteria” y pasé 3 meses volando de un lado a otro del estudio. En Dublín. ¡Cantar todas las armonías altas en esas enormes pistas de Def Leppard se convirtió en una marca registrada para mí!
Me mudé a Los Ángeles en 1988 y viví allí hasta 1993, cuando regresé a la granja familiar en Grantham. Toqué con “Sweet” en los años 90, que era una banda fantástica con la que tocar; luego no toqué durante unos diez años.
Me casé, estaba criando a mi hijo y de la nada recibí una llamada preguntándome si quería reformar “Lionheart” y también ser parte de otra banda llamada “Air Race” – que eran otra banda de principios de los 80.
Luego recibí la llamada de Laurence Archer de “Grand Slam” preguntándome si estaría interesado en ser el bajista de ellos.
Grand Slam se formó originalmente en 1984 después de la ruptura de «Thin Lizzy» y originalmente los miembros eran Phil Lynott, Brian Downey y John Sykes, todos ex miembros de «Thin Lizzy». John Sykes se fue para unirse a “Whitesnake” y fue reemplazado por Laurence Archer de “UFO”.
Conozco a Laurence desde hace años y solía tocar con él en una banda llamada “X-UFO”, ¡que era más que nada para divertirme un poco!
Así que aquí estamos ahora en 2024. Lionheart sigue fuerte, Gland Slam está celebrando 40 años y tiene un nuevo álbum disponible el 7 de junio, festivales programados y una agenda de gira saludable reservada.
He jugado con mucha gente a lo largo de los años y nunca pensé que seguiría haciéndolo a esta edad. Honestamente puedo decir que ha sido muy divertido y ¡espero con ansias el futuro!

What do Rocky Newton, Def Leppard, Lionheart, MSG and Grand Slam have in common? Read on to find out!
A couple of weeks ago I heard that a musician from my hometown was recording a video with his band “Grand Slam” close to where I live in Valencia. I’ve heard of the band “Grand Slam” but I felt a little ashamed at not really knowing Rocky Newton. We both come from Grantham and we both went to the Kings Grammar School, he is friends with my cousin, but our paths had never crossed.
I drove down to Biker Bar in Moraira where the band was shooting the video and hung out with Rocky Newton and the rest of the Grand Slam members – Benjy Reid, Laurence Archer and Mike Dyer.
I had just two questions to ask Rocky – three things our hometown is famous for and for him to tell me about his musical career:

Well, the first band of note was “Lionheart” – of who I am still a member and we have a new album out now called “The Grace Of A Dragonfly” We formed “Lionheart” in London in 1980 and then we went over to LA to record an album, we toured until around 1985 when the band reached a natural conclusion.
I was then asked to go over to Germany to play with Michael Schenker on some studio albums, for his brother Rudolf from the Scorpions. Michael went on to create the band MSG (McAuley Schenker Group) and asked me to be part of it – which was incredible!
We singed to EMI in the UK and Capital in the USA and ended up touring the world and I was involved in the next 3 albums, even getting to write some of the songs myself.
Before all of this I had a band called The Next Band with two other mates from the Kings school – Frank Noon and John Lockton. We ended up moving to Sheffield and befriended a very young Def Leppard. We were there when they auditioned for drummers and on their first record, they borrowed our drummer (Frank Noon) because they were between drummers at the time. This was 1979. Their career took off at a lot greater pace than ours, but we kept in touch and I got a call from the lead singer (Joe Elliot) and he asked me to go down to London to record some backing vocals for “Rock Of Ages”
Fast forward a few years and we were all at Frank Noon’s wedding and Joe asked me again to do backing vocals – in fact I ended up doing the backing vocals on the entire “Hysteria” album and spent 3 months flying backwards and forwards to the studio in Dublin. Singing all the high harmonies on those huge Def Leppard tracks became a bit of trademark for me!
I moved to LA in 1988 and lived there until 1993, when I moved back to the family farm in Grantham. I played with “Sweet” in the 90’s, which was a fantastic band to play with – then I didn’t play for about ten years.
I got married, I was bringing up my son and out of the blue I got a call asking if I wanted to reform “Lionheart” and also be part of another band called “Air Race” – who were another band from the early 80’s
Then I got the call from Laurence Archer from “Grand Slam” asking if I would be interested in being bass player for them.
Grand Slam was originally formed in 1984 after the breakup of “Thin Lizzy” and originally members were Phil Lynott, Brian Downey and John Sykes – all ex- “Thin Lizzy” members. John Sykes left in to join “Whitesnake” and was replaced by Laurence Archer from “UFO”.
I’ve known Laurence for years and used to play with him in a band called “X-UFO” – which was for a bit of fun more than anything!
So here we are now in 2024 Lionheart is still going strong, Gland Slam are celebrating 40 years and have a new album out on June 7th, festivals lined up and a healthy tour diary booked in!
I’ve played with a lot of people over the years and never thought I would be still doing it as this age, I can honestly say it’s been a lot of fun and I am looking forward to he future!
